These candied fruits (Mut) are some of my fondest memories of Tet, Lunar New Year. They’re very, very sweet but everyone has a tray in the house to offer to visitors with a cup of tea. There are several different types in this tray, lotus seeds, ginger, custard apple, marrow, water chestnut and coconut – see the video below for an explanation of what’s what…
This tray was made in Cabramatta by a local sweets manufacturer. After the new year, these Mut will be on special, I’d encourage you to give them a try and tell me what you think, but make sure you have them with a cup of Chinese tea to cut the sweetness!
I love these so much, they're really very sweet but more-ish at the same time
I break up the sweetness with some tea
Ooh, mut dua! Yum! You're making me hungry, although the coconut is the only one I've ever had.
Time to hit the store. I hope the local Oriental grocery has some. I used to commute 2 hours to a much larger city and up there is where I bought it previously.
ttovie, you've gotta try the custard apple one.. it's the tubular one in the plastic… utterly delicious… wait a few more days, until new year is over and they'll be half price
I like custard apple. Thanks, I'll look for that one too now that I know what it is.
Wonderful! These are the sort of things I always look at and wonder what they are. Thank you for the great video and commentary. I hope there will still be some floating around the shops!
Now's the time to buy Lauren.. they should be on special!
