Australian Food Blogger Survey
By Thang Ngo
Eat Drink Blog, an annual food bloggers conference, was held on Saturday, 9 November 2013 in Perth. Noodlies, Sydney food blog undertook a survey of conference delegates during my presentation on the Future of Blogging. This is the first ever noodlies Australian Food Blogger Survey looking specifically at their preferred blogging platform, social media usage and ownership of mobile devices.
In total, 83 food bloggers took the survey. The full set of results are shown below.
Blogging Platform
Australian bloggers overwhelmingly prefer WordPress – almost seven in ten use this blogging platform.
Smartphone Ownership
Smartphones (internet enabled mobiles) are used by 98% of bloggers surveyed which significantly higher than seven in ten for the general population. 2% of respondents (2 bloggers) do not own a smartphone.
Tablet Ownership
Three in five Australian food bloggers surveyed owned a tablet, slightly higher than the penetration for the general population. Magna Global estimates by 2015, three in five Australians will own a tablet.
Social Media
Australian food bloggers are prolific users of social media to promote their food blogs. Twitter (87%) is the most popular closely followed by Facebook (84%) then Instagram (70%) and Pinterest (63%).
Video Posts
Use of videos in posts is still relatively low – only one in ten bloggers said they have posted 10 or more video posts.
Video intention
While actual usage is low, seven in 10 said they would consider using more videos in the future.
Respondent Profile
Most respondents have been blogging for more than two years (60%).
The majority of bloggers came from Western Australia (52%), which is not surprising given the conference was held in Perth. Almost one in three came from NSW.
Conclusion
Australian food bloggers surveyed strongly prefer WordPress for blogging. Not surprisingly they are highly engaged with social media – Twitter narrowly tops Facebook. Currently only a few are regularly using video; only one in 10 have posted more than 10 video posts and only 4% use Vine. However, they intend to incorporate more videos in the future, with seven in 10 expressing an interest.

Many thanks to the 83 delicious food bloggers who took part in this first ever noodlies Australian Food Blogger Survey.
What are your thoughts on the results of this survey? Interesting? Surprising or just confirmation of what you already know? Share your thoughts with a comment 🙂
I’ll out myself. I’m one of the two… But I did come home announcing that I needed one, so my time in the dark ages may be coming to an end. 😉
Great post – really interesting to look at the stats.
Lol, that’s great that you’re moving quickly on this. Shall I be seeing your tweets and instagram posts in the future?
thanks for the post. interesting stats esp the one about the social media usage and blogging platform preference. was considering about changing my blog to wordpress for a while because blogger is a bit restrictive but haven’t had the effort lol
Very understandable Annie, it took me ages before I made the move from blogger too!
Um…the presence of 0-1 years blogging group at the conference…weren’t bloggers only eligible to attend if their blog had been up for over a year?
Hmm… if I’d known sneaking in was an option…
Oh dear, didn’t know that, but next year, I hope to see you 🙂
Hi Janet,
We had a number of people who initially said they were coming to the conference and were offered places who dropped out at the last minute.
In those instances places were offered to bloggers who had shown interest in attending who didn’t meet all the initial criteria.
Cheers,
Matt
Interesting data!
Thanks Gaby
awesome insight thang!
Awww thanks Tina.
I’m not particularly surprised that WordPress is the predominant blogging platform, seeing as it is currently one of the blogging industry’s platform leaders.
And the low uptake of vine is a reflection of the lack of video content in our field, though it can be argued that instagram’s latest video ability might counteract that. Personally I think video might be a little hard. Many food bloggers I know are introverts, so putting ourselves in front of a rolling camera could be a big ask.
Thanks for conducting the survey! It certainly was an interesting exercise to glimpse into our food blogging world.
Good points Melissa, really enjoyed putting the survey together. It was an eye opener in some cases and confirmed what we all knew in others.
A fascinating read! Thank you!
Many thanks for taking the time to comment Jolene.
Thanks for sharing this Thang, it seems I’m still in the dark ages with my Blogger platform 🙂 But at least I got my hands on a smartphone for the first time 2 weeks before the conference, haha.
I was bummed I didn’t get to actually meet you in person, but it was great to hear your talk. We have family in Cabramatta so when we next find ourselves there I’ll get in touch and we can go out for lunch xx
Yes, that would be fun, will take you to our fav Cabbra restaurant 🙂 Loved your session!
Really interesting stats Thang. Thanks for the quick follow up post-conference, I’ve been wondering about the results of your survey! I’ve actually been thinking about starting up a Twitter account after realizing the real significance of social media over the weekend. Argh, keeping up with technology is daunting! Was great to meet you on Sat and Sunday. Thanks for all of the effort that you put into your presentation 🙂
Nice work with the survey. I particularly found the results regarding social media interesting as I would have expected the Twitter/Facebook stats to be the other way round and I was expecting more Instagram usage.
It would be interesting to see how this changes over time.
Always the statistician! Thanks for the info 😀
He he that’s me 🙂
Awesome Thang, so glad you did this, very interesting results.
Great post Thang – I loved your presentation! Great to see some stats following the conference.
This is very helpful information! Thanks Thang
