The Sultan is a boutique hotel located at the door step of Kampong Glam, the Malay-Arab cultural precinct. It was once the seat of Malay royalty in Singapore and retains much of the exoticism and mystery to this day. The Sultan Mosque, shops selling exotic goods from scarves, carpet to middle eastern perfumes, and food from every corner of the world are within a few minutes stroll.
The Sultan offers 64 rooms and is a result of the faithful preservation and recreation of 10 traditional shophouses. It retains many beautiful architectural features such as tall columns, wide arcs and beautiful full-length shuttered windows. It’s truly a boutique hotel, no two are the same.
Architectural highlights like stark white walls, ornate screens, dome features, meandering paths, open bamboo courtyards and a roof top bar (above) create an authentic middle-eastern atmosphere.
Noodlies, Sydney food and travel blog stayed in the Sultan Suite and the hotel theme is carried through to the guest rooms which features white screens, high ceilings and an enormous king size bed, fit for a Sultan (see noodlies featured video). The room has plenty of storage space, desk space and a very handy bench at the foot of the bed. Aircond, large flat screen TV, in-room safe are all standard as is breakfast and free local calls, including local mobiles.
The Sultan’s Pasha Restaurant & Bar is a multi-concept restaurant, bar and private lounge boasting gorgeous architecture, authentic Moroccan furnishing, a lively alfresco area and a full-length balcony. It’s also where guests have their buffet breakfast each morning (above) and offers the usual hot breakfast standards. The omelette deserves special mention, thick, fluffy and just that bit creamy, as does the spiced chicken and pork sausages, lots of complex flavours to wake up the mind and palate.
Front of house staff are helpful and go the extra mile, one walking with me out on the street to point me in the right direction. At breakfast the staff might be a little hard to find, just relax and find a table, they’re not far.
Nothing about The Sultan boutique hotel is ordinary – no room is the same. It’s located in the culturally rich Kampong Glam area that offers something for everyone from day to night. This stunning hotel holds it’s own in area – The Sultan is as rich, mysterious and just as exotic as its surroundings; meandering paths, stark white walls, stunning decor transport guests to the middle east.
One for the adventurer in all of us.
