Spice Market at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi

The objective of most resorts is to provide everything a guest may want in the one place so they can relax and enjoy the getaway.  That’s what the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi excels at.  As per noodlies, Sydney food and travel blog’s earlier post, this beach resort has what you’d expect from a luxury property; comfortable beach facing chalets, several pools, spa, kids activities and a wonderful Club Lounge.

Activities are one thing, but guests need to eat.  Spice Market restaurant offers a-la-carte lunch and dinner and a generous buffet breakfast.  Recently refurbished, Spice Market is slick and inviting.  Guests can dine inside; the decor here is warm and inviting from the extensive use of wood and downlights, or sit outdoors amongst the luscious landscaped gardens with views of the main resort pool.

For breakfast, my favourite is the cook to order section.  I always start with an omelette, most days it’s capsicum and tomato, I like my eggs a little runny and the cook always makes sure I get it :).  I usually chase down the eggs with a bowl of freshly cooked noodles – flat rice noodles with chicken and vegetables.  However, sometimes for a change, I chose plain congee with century eggs and a splash of soy sauce.

Walter usually goes for the local breakfast of rice and curry which smells delicious but I find a little heavy for breakfast.  Still it’s a pretty popular choice with guests, Walter included.  Spice Market also also has a pretty impressive range of hot food including a delicious bread and butter pudding.

If you’re a fan of bread, the choice can be a little bewildering, from freshly baked crusty rolls, croissants to sweet buns.

To end breakfast I usually head for the fruit bar offering cut oranges and seasonal fruit such as watermelon and pineapple.  A dollop of yogurt on top works pretty well too.

At the end of breakfast we go for a short stroll along the beach before retiring to our chalet to write or read.

We always try take the short stroll into town for lunch, but sometimes, it’s just too hard to leave the comfortable resort.  On these afternoons, we’re at Spice Market for lunch.

I’m a sucker for the spaghetti bolognese with garlic bread.  Especially towards the end of the holiday, the body cries out for some western food.  The sauce has good depth with a generous amount of mince, perfect for wiping up every last bit with my toasted garlic bread.

Walter orders pizza – he’s obviously missing western food, too. Good, tasty topping though I’d prefer a thicker crust.

At the end of our three nights at the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, I feel completely recharged, something my body and mind need after the most hectic 12 months ever.  Thanks to the wonderful facilities at the resort, special credit to the wonderfully comfortable beach chalet, exclusive Meritus Club Lounge and of course, many wonderful meals at Spice Market.

Many, many thanks to Alham Ahmad Daldiri, executive chef at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa for serving up such wonderful food and for checking on us almost every morning.

I’m writing this post on a bitterly cold Sydney winter afternoon, wishing I was back at the Meritus Pelangi.
